Browns DE Garrett 'doubtful,' but close

CLEVELAND (AP) Cleveland Browns rookie defensive end Myles Garrett might be close to making his NFL debut.

The top overall pick in this year's draft has missed Cleveland's first two games because of a high right-ankle sprain. Coach Hue Jackson has not yet ruled him out of Sunday's game at Indianapolis.

Garrett made significant progress this week after hurting his ankle during practice Sept. 6. Jackson said Friday the team will continue to be "cautious," but the fact that he remains a possibility to play against the Colts is encouraging. Garrett is listed as "doubtful" on the injury report.

Bills LT Glenn, DT Dareus out vs. Denver

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) The Buffalo Bills will be without left tackle Cordy Glenn and defensive tackle Marcell Dareus when they play the Denver Broncos. Neither player practiced this week.

Glenn hurt his right ankle in Buffalo's 9-3 loss to Carolina. He also has been limited by a left foot injury that kept him out for much of the preseason.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Coach Sean McVay walked into the postgame news conference and immediately asked, "Anyone have a beer?"

He probably wasn't the only person who wanted a drink after watching a surprisingly thrilling Thursday night shootout between his Rams and the San Francisco 49ers that wasn't decided until Los Angeles prevented a potential game-tying 2-point try and then delivered a rare defensive stop after blowing the onside kick in a 41-39 victory.

Hernandez had severe CTE; NFL, Pats sued

BOSTON (AP) Former New England Patriots star Aaron Hernandez had a severe case of the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, researchers said on Thursday. His lawyer announced a lawsuit against the NFL and the team, accusing them of hiding the true dangers of the sport.

Dr. Ann McKee, the director of the CTE Center at Boston University, said Hernandez had Stage 3 (out of 4) of the disease, which can cause violent mood swings, depression and other cognitive disorders .

Giants LB Goodson, RT Hart out Sunday

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) Middle linebacker B.J. Goodson and right tackle Bobby Hart are going to miss the New York Giants game Sunday against the Eagles in Philadelphia.

Goodson is out for the second straight game with a shin injury. Hart sprained his right ankle in the opener against Dallas. He started against Detroit but re-injured it.

Jags LT Robinson, CB Ramsey should play

LONDON (AP) The Jacksonville Jaguars expect left tackle Cam Robinson and cornerback Jalen Ramsey to play against Baltimore on Sunday despite injuries.

Robinson (shoulder) and Ramsey (ankle) were listed as questionable Friday along with backup quarterback Chad Henne (illness). Henne came down with a stomach virus during the flight to London, but also should be good to go Sunday.

Packers LB Perry to have hand surgery

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) The banged-up Green Bay Packers have lost another key player to injury with outside linebacker Nick Perry scheduled to have hand surgery.

Coach Mike McCarthy said he doesn't know how much time Perry will miss. He was off to a good start as the bookend to fellow edge rusher Clay Matthews with 1+ sacks.

Players ask Goodell to support activism

A group of current and former NFL players has asked Commissioner Roger Goodell for the league's support for their campaign for racial equality and criminal justice reform.

Yahoo Sports is reporting the players sent a 10-page memo to Goodell and NFL executive Troy Vincent in August asking for money, political involvement and other commitments from the league. It also asked the NFL to recognize the month of November as activism awareness month.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) Cam Newton was limited to mostly light throwing during practice as the Panthers continue preparations for their game Sunday against the Saints.

Newton is expected to start.

Jets' Leonard Williams bothered by wrist

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) Big Cat is a bit banged up for the New York Jets.

Defensive lineman Leonard Williams was limited at practice Thursday with a wrist injury that he says is a bone bruise.
